Call For Papers: Asian Performing Arts on Stage and on Screen

A hybrid symposium (in-person and on Zoom) organized by The Center for Musical Humanities and The World Music Center, UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, May 13-15, 2022

Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

  1. Performance creation (composers/performers/producers) engaged with community outreach

  2. Platforms for Asian performing arts inside and beyond cultures of origin

  3. Asian performing arts and geopolitical soft power

  4. Asian performing arts and sustainability

  5. Asian performing arts in interdisciplinary contexts

  6. Diversity in Asian performing arts in Asia and beyond

  7. Minority voices in Asian performing arts

  8. Transnational Asian film

  9. LGBTQ identity in Asian performing arts

  10. Asian Pop Culture through the gaze of performing arts

  11. Asian representation, sound and music sampling in film

  12. Music and dance for the young and the transmission of traditional culture

Proposals are invited for individual papers, organized panels, and roundtable discussions. We also welcome proposals for pre-recorded lecture-performances or other creative contributions; these may be submitted using the same categories for papers, panels or discussions, according to the time and number of participants involved.

  • Individual Paper: 20 minutes for presentation plus 10 minutes for Q&A

  • Panels/Roundtables: up to 2 hours per session, involving three or more individuals

  • Live Performance: up to one hour (including stage set up and sound check)

  • Individual Film Screening: up to 2 hours for film screening followed by discussion

The symposium will be conducted in English, and we welcome pre-recorded presentations in Asian languages with English subtitles.

Abstracts must be between 200 and 250 words and should appear as a single paragraph. Panel proposals should include a panel abstract (150 words) and abstracts for each included paper. Performance and film abstracts should include a total duration as well as any technical requirements.

All accepted presenters are expected to pre-register at the symposium link. Other symposium attendees are encouraged to pre-register online as well. Attendees may attend in-person on the UCLA campus, or on-line.

We invite submissions from artists and scholars at any stage of their careers, including graduate students, as well as individuals working outside of academia. Proposals for presentations that combine scholarship and performing arts practice are especially encouraged.
