"Mapping from Home เป็นธีมที่ตั้งต้นจากสถานการณ์โรคระบาดทั่วโลกที่ยังคงสร้างข้อจำกัดในการเดินทางตามใจนึก พวกเราก้าวเข้าสู่โครงการการแลกเปลี่ยนออนไลน์ด้วยความไม่แน่นอนและไม่รู้ว่าจะไปสุดทางได้เพียงใด อย่างไรก็ตาม ในที่สุดการค้นคว้าของศิลปินแต่ละคนก็ได้ขยายผลไปมากทั้งในแนวราบและแนวดิ่ง สิ่งที่คุณจะได้เห็นคือผลผลิตของการค้นคว้าที่เปรียบกับตระกร้าผลไม้สด หลากหลายทั้งในแง่สีสัน รสชาติ และคุณประโยชน์

The City & The City 2021: Mapping from Home อาจไม่ได้วาดภาพกรุงเทพฯ หรือกรุงโตเกียวใหม่ว่าเป็นเช่นไรในสายตาเราเฉกเช่น Divided Senses ในปี 2020 แต่มันคือคำเชื้อเชิญให้เราได้เดินทางดิ่งลึกลงไป พร้อมเผชิญหน้ากับตัวตนอันเป็นปัจเจกบุคคลของเรา ณ เวลาที่การแยกตัวคือความจำเป็นมากกว่าทางเลือกที่กำหนดเองได้ ไม่ว่าเราจะอาศัยอยู่เมืองไหนก็ตาม ข้อจำกัดเชิงกายภาพและภูมิศาสตร์กลับกรุยทางให้เราเข้าถึงพื้นที่ภายในที่ซับซ้อนเกินอธิบาย อันเต็มไปด้วยจินตนาการและความเป็นไปได้อย่างไม่มีขีดจำกัด นั่นคือสิ่งที่เราในฐานะมนุษย์มี และมีร่วมกัน และเป็นสิ่งที่เตือนใจเราว่าเราคือใคร มากกว่าการกำหนดเส้นขอบเขตเชิงรัฐชาติและสังคมใดๆ ยิ่งนัก" - ส่วนหนึ่งของ Director's statement โดยศศพินทุ์ ศิริวาณิช

BIPAM และ Tokyo Festival Farm 東京芸術祭ファーム ขอเชิญชวนทุกท่านร่วมชมผลการเรียนรู้อันหลากหลายของศิลปินทั้ง 6 คนในโครงการแลกเปลี่ยน The City and The City: Mapping from Home ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการมองลึกลงไปในแง่ความสัมพันธ์ของตัวเองต่อมนุษย์รอบข้าง ผ่านการเดินทางกลับบ้าน การถอดรื้อสิ่งธรรมดาในชีวิตประจำวัน และการสัญจรของความสัมพันธ์ในครอบครัว หรือการมองไกลออกไปเกิบกรอบความเป็นมนุษย์ ทั้งการสำรวจพืชพรรณ การทำงานกับสัตว์เลี้ยง หรือการสังเกตุภาพทับซ้อนของพื้นที่ที่เรียกว่า "บ้าน" กับโครงสร้างระบบนิเวศในสังคม

"Restriction of free mobility that came to us because of the global pandemic was the origin of this year’s theme - Mapping from Home. We embarked on the online exchange program uncertain and reserved, but each artist’s individual research eventually expanded far both horizontally and vertically. You are now presented with research fruits as diverse in color, taste, and nutrition, as those in a fresh fruit basket.

Unlike "Divided Senses in 2020", "The City & The City 2021:Mapping from Home" does not repaint new pictures of what Bangkok or Tokyo is for us. Instead, it is an invitation to take a deep journey and confront one's own individual self at a time when isolation is more obligatory than optional no matter which city you are in. Physical and geographical limits give way to elusive terrains of the inner world with countless possibilities through imagination - something we humans have had and still have in common, and something that reminds us of who we are far better than any imagined national and social border can. BIPAM and Tokyo Festival Farm proudly invites you to witness the diverse findings from six artists in this exchange program; “The City and The City: Mapping from Home”. The process had led some to inward explorations of the individual human and the relationships with closed ones, via homebound journeys, observations of the daily life, or even traffic of relationships. While for other artists, it allowed then to seek for outward inspirations beyond the realm of human, such as observation of plants, having your pet dog as an artistic partner, or contemplating the ecosystemic leak in relation to the space one calls ‘home’.
